Noctilucent clouds: What are they and how can you see them?

Noctilucent clouds are rare high-altitude clouds that can only be seen under specific conditions. They appear during the summer months, after sunset, as thin wispy blue/silver streaks ‘dancing’ across the sky.

The name noctilucent is derived from the Latin words “nocto” and “lucent” which translates to “night” and “shining” respectively, according to Merriam Webster (opens in new tab).
